The circulation of motor vehicles is governed by a number of rules. Traffic offences entail administrative penalties known as traffic fines. These traffic fines shall consist of the suspension of the driving licence for a period of time or a financial penalty depending on the gravity of the infringement.

Traffic fines may benefit from a procedure of administrative reconsideration or review which may cancel them because of, for example if the form has not been properly fulfilled by the police or because of administrative irregularities. The Administration sometimes makes mistakes while on the processing of files, cancelling them.

From July 1st 2006, traffic infractions can also be punished with the loss of 12 points (8 points for new drivers up to three years). However, this new system may also benefits from a procedure of administrative reconsideration or review, recovering the points lost.

Common traffic fines in Spain are related to parking offences, speeding offences, drink-driving, traffic lights and documentation. Each of these kinds of traffic fines may be appealed using the appropriate proceeding at the appropriate authority.

Traffic fines may be the consequence of serious infractions, major infractions or minor infractions, penalizing them with fines that range from 91 euros to 602 euros. In every case, the penalty has a prescription deadline, after it, the fine is cancelled.
